Birdwatching
THE GAMBIA AND ITS BIRDS
Although only covering just 11,0000 sq km The Gambia is fortunate to be home to a diversity of colourful birdlife. Over 500 species have been recorded and in two weeks one can comfortably expect to see over 200 of these, depending on your chosen itinerary. Easy birdwatching can be found close to the comfortable coastal hotels - in fact some hotel grounds boast extensive birdlists!
SITES AND HABITATS
A diverse range of habitats is the reason that so many birds can be found in The Gambia. This, combined with well managed nature reserves and the short travellking distances between sites makes The Gambia an ideal choice for birdwatchers. In the coastal region The ABUKO FOREST RESERVE boasts over 250 species, as well as crocodiles, monkeys and antelopes. MAKASUTU offers first class birdwatching in coastal dry forest and along mangrove lined creeks. Further afield are the brackish riverine forests of TENDABA and the freshwater of Basse where the enigmatic Egyptian Plover may be found
